Minnesota Fraud Scandals Raise Questions About Media Coverage and Accountability
The Trump administration halted federal child care funds nationwide pending proof of legitimate use after a viral video alleged $9 billion in Minnesota fraud, officials said.
- On Tuesday, YouTuber Nick Shirley returned to the Quality Learning Center, day care on Nicollet Avenue, after posting a 42-minute video viewed more than 130 million times alleging inactivity.
- The Quality Learning Center has received $1.9 million in 2025 and $4 million total from Minnesota Child Care Assistance Program and Shirley said it appeared inactive despite being licensed to serve 99 children.
- Shirley returned accompanied by the investigator who pulled funding records while FOX 9 filmed outside the Quality Learning Center, capturing children and staff observed inside the center on Tuesday.
- Federal authorities intensified scrutiny as Department of Children, Youth and Families Commissioner Tikki Brown said unannounced visits found children present and no fraud evidence, while FBI Director Kash Patel and Assistant United States Attorney Joe Thompson reported suspected fraud exceeding $9 billion.
- The center rebutted that Shirley visited outside its regular hours, and The New York Post showed children entering Monday afternoon; FOX 9 reported the video likely shot Wednesday, Dec. 17, while Newsweek has not verified his claims.
