Minnesota DNR to launch new, more flexible licensing system for hunters and anglers
The updated platform adds online, app and in-person purchases, plus paper, PDF and app storage for licenses.
On Tuesday, June 9, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will launch a new electronic licensing system, replacing a platform in use for 25 years.
DNR Fish and Wildlife Division director Kelly Straka noted the previous system was so outdated it "was able to vote, drive and even drink," after delays pushed the project from early 2025.
Managed by the DNR and Kansas City, Missouri-based PayIT, the platform offers flexibility to purchase licenses online, via mobile app, or in person, with storage options including paper, PDF, or digital app copies.
Anglers may fish without a license through June 8 because a gap in service occurred between the old system's June 2 shutdown and the new launch, though all other fishing regulations and bag limits remain active.
A second phase rolling out late this year will expand the electronic system to include licenses for recreational vehicles, Straka said.
