Mainstream schools to receive extra funding for SEND pupils as part of £4bn package
The £4 billion package includes £1.6 billion for an inclusive mainstream fund and £1.8 billion for specialist support, aiming to close the SEND attainment gap, officials said.
- The government says it will spend £4bn to make mainstream schools in England more inclusive for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities , including £1.6bn going directly to schools, early years settings and colleges over three years.
- Under the plans, children's education, health and care plans would be reassessed after leaving primary school and after GCSEs, raising concerns among parents about potential withdrawal of support.
- Teaching unions said the £1.6bn funding over three years is 'barely a drop in the bucket' due to years of underfunding, and that families need children's needs identified early and given the right help straight away.
