Minister says ‘something’ happened to trigger order to surrender citizenship docs
Immigration officials are reviewing all 4,100 approved claims after recall emails went to a few dozen people, the department said.
On Tuesday, Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced the department is reviewing all 4,100 citizenship claims made under a recent law following a document recall issue affecting applicants.
Diab ordered an investigation after learning "something" triggered recalls for "Lost Canadians" born before Dec. 15, 2025, who claimed citizenship by descent under the new law.
Some applicants were ordered to surrender passports and citizenship certificates last week, though others received follow-up emails over the weekend confirming their status was "fine."
Individuals who moved to Canada retain their citizenship status and may continue working while the department conducts its comprehensive review of all applications.
Officials have paused finalizing any new applications to prioritize the review, ensuring clarity for Canadians as they determine which claims remain valid under the legislation.
Immigration Minister Lena Diab stated that she had asked her department to open an investigation as soon as she learned that "an incident" had occurred, causing a wave of reminders of citizenship documents.
