Minister says naming Tumbler Ridge guns would be irresponsible, as FBI tells of 'SKS'
The complaint says Jesse Van Rootselaar discussed using an SKS rifle and other weapons as investigators review photos and chats tied to the killings.
An FBI complaint filed on Tuesday in Seattle alleges James Bryant conspired with mass shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar, detailing plans for the February 10, 2026, attack in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, through exchanged photos and online messages.
The complaint details Discord chats where Van Rootselaar discussed possessing a "machine-gun conversion device" for an SKS rifle, which she allegedly planned to use after police returned the previously confiscated weapon to her.
Photos shared with Bryant depict Van Rootselaar with a KRISS Vector rifle, a model banned in Canada in 2024, while Bryant faces charges of conspiracy to murder in a foreign country for allegedly advising the shooter.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree defended withholding specific weapon details on Wednesday, calling disclosure "irresponsible" while investigations continue, despite criticism from victims' families demanding answers about why police returned the firearms.
An expert panel is reviewing whether to ban semi-automatic SKS weapons, while Assistant RCMP Commissioner Elija Rain stated investigators have made "substantial progress" in the criminal probe despite ongoing restrictions on public disclosure.
