Canadian PM Carney, in Ukraine, says can't rule out sending peacekeepers
Canada pledges $2 billion in military aid including drones, armored vehicles, and electronic warfare equipment to support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression, reinforcing international security cooperation.
- During a surprise visit to Kyiv on Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined details of a C$2 billion military assistance package providing drones, armoured vehicles and other munitions to Ukraine.
- Rooted in a June G7 pledge, the package reflects Carney's $2 billion commitment detailed amid talks on security guarantees for Ukraine, including potential postwar troop contributions.
- Carney specified how the funds will be split, noting $835-million for critical equipment, $150 million for drones and electronic warfare, $112 million for the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, $68.2 million for the Czech ammunition initiative, and $500 million for U.S.-sourced air-defence equipment.
- Deliveries will begin next month, with more than C$1 billion for drones, ammunition and armoured vehicles, including NATO-prioritized equipment and air-defence purchases, Carney said.
- The announcement also signals longer-term commitments as Carney said Canada will fund joint production of advanced drones, mobilize private-sector role in reconstruction and work on returning abducted Ukrainian children, part of $22 billion total Canadian support to date.
