Nevada Independent: Dark Money Funds Over Third of $14M Ads; Donors Hidden Until After Primary
Groups that do not disclose donors have spent more than $14 million on Nevada primary airtime, with one Lombardo-linked nonprofit leading the field.
Advertisers have spent about $14 million on Nevada primary airtime this year, with more than one-third of those dollars from groups whose funders' identities aren't public information, according to AdImpact analysis.
Gov. Joe Lombardo's affiliated nonprofit, the Service First Fund, leads spending with about $4 million, utilizing 501 status to avoid disclosing donors while airing issue-focused ads.
Since the "shadow period" began, the Nevada Frontline Victory Fund and the Save Nevada Now PAC, started by Assm. Lisa Cole, spent over $600,000 combined attacking candidate Adriana Guzmán Fralick while leveraging reporting loopholes.
Centrist Democrats run the Effective Governing Coalition, which spent $406,000 supporting Rep. Susie Lee, including $101,000 from the Cedar Innovation Foundation, a cryptocurrency-affiliated group.
Brendan Glavin of OpenSecrets noted that dark money groups have "become ingrained in the process," with these ads viewed about 77 million times across American elections.
