Military police directed to stop accepting sexual offence complaints
Military police will no longer accept Criminal Code sexual offence complaints starting today due to upcoming military justice system reforms by the Liberal government.
Bill C-11 will remove military jurisdiction over sexual offence investigations and prosecutions involving Canadian Armed Forces members inside Canada, transferring them to the civilian justice system.
The reform follows recommendations from former Supreme Court justices Morris Fish and Louise Arbour, with Arbour's 2022 report noting distrust by Canadian Armed Forces members in the military justice system handling such cases.
Some survivors requested the choice between military and civilian justice systems, but this option was not adopted; opposition amendments allowing choice were removed after the Liberals gained a majority in the House of Commons.
