Milan police clash with protesters on second day of unrest
Police used tear gas and water cannons as at least 160 people were detained, including many minors, after shops were looted and windows smashed.
On Sunday, Milan police clashed with protesters who threw stones and looted shops near Piazza Duomo, using tear gas and water cannons to disperse several hundred hooded demonstrators.
Saturday's unrest in Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo, and Turin saw demonstrators protest against the rising cost of living, with 28 arrests reported according to police records.
Authorities took more than 60 protesters to the police station for further checks, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence and announced a government meeting on Monday to discuss how to address the situation.
The unrest in Italy mirrors violent protests in neighboring France, where hundreds of thousands of people angered by rising costs took to the streets on Saturday.
Around Milan's cathedral, young people once again ransacked business, and the police used water cannons and tear gas. Now, Prime Minister Meloni wants to discuss further measures.
