Migrant worker lynched on suspicion of being Bangladeshi immigrant in Sambalpur
- On Wednesday evening, a 30-year-old migrant labourer from Murshidabad was beaten to death at a tea stall in Shantinagar, Sambalpur, around 8.30 pm.
- Co-Workers and family of Juel Sheikh say the attack began after a group of four to five unidentified persons accused the men of being undocumented immigrants, while Odisha Police said the assault followed a sudden provocation involving a beedi.
- Armed with bamboo sticks, the group started beating the workers after demanding Aadhaar and identity documents; three fled while the miscreants caught and thrashed Juel despite valid IDs.
- Police have arrested six people and said inquiries are ongoing; the injured Akir Sheikh and Palash Sheikh were hospitalized, while the body was kept at the District Headquarters Hospital morgue with a post-mortem on Thursday.
- The case has drawn political attention as Samirul Islam warned Bengali-speaking migrant workers face targeting in BJP-ruled states, while local Trinamool Congress leaders and Emani Biswas visited the victim's home and promised assistance.
