Midlands set for 40 hours of snow as forecasters predict start date
Forecasters predict up to 40 hours of snow next week, with the heaviest falls in Scotland and significant accumulation of around 30cm in Yorkshire and the Midlands.
- On Monday, the Met Office forecasts snow from Saturday, January 24 through Tuesday, January 27 across the Midlands and central and northern England, easing from Wednesday, January 28.
- A collision of weather fronts will drive unsettled conditions as a deep area of low pressure approaching from the southwest brings rain and hill snow near the UK.
- Met Office maps show a potential 15 hour window for snow next week, while WX Charts place the main band around midday on January 27 with up to 40 inches in the Scottish Highlands.
- National Grid engineers warn of short-term power loss and delays to road, rail, air and ferry services, with strong winds raising coastal overtopping and flooding risks until Saturday.
- Looking further ahead, the Met Office forecast indicates ongoing battles between Atlantic systems and colder air, with Madden warning of snow in northern regions and southern England. _'Importantly, the next bout of unsettled weather conditions will mix with the colder conditions during Tuesday evening and into much of Wednesday and the areas at risk for snow and heavy snow are in the northern half of the country once again and including lower levels from central England and upwards and also in large parts of Ireland but with some of this snow now starting to form in parts of southern England during this same period_', Madden said.
