Bishop of Northampton charged with child rape
Police said the bishop was charged after an investigation into non-recent safeguarding allegations and is due in court on August 14.
Staffordshire Police charged Bishop David Oakley, 70, with two counts of rape of a female under 16 following an investigation into non-recent safeguarding allegations regarding the Bishop of Northampton.
Following his arrest in September 2025, the rape and serious sexual offences team investigated allegations against the Desborough resident, who had withdrawn from public ministry late last year.
The Diocese confirmed the charges against Oakley, whose status as Bishop of Northampton remains unchanged while legal processes proceed, according to diocesan statements.
Oakley is due to appear at Cannock Magistrates Court on August 14, marking the transition from police investigation to formal judicial proceedings.
A Catholic School in Aylesbury issued a statement to parents, stating the "safety, care, and wellbeing of our pupils remains our highest priority" amid the ongoing case.
