13-Year-Old Football Player Dies After Going Into Cardiac Arrest During Practice
Doctors suspect a genetic condition may have caused the collapse, and the family has raised more than $32,000 for medical and travel costs.
Caden Sorrell, a 13-year-old student at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina, died on Sunday, August 30, following cardiac arrest during football practice on Friday, August 28.
A GoFundMe was established to help the Sorrell family with funeral and medical expenses, as his siblings require specialist evaluations following doctors' belief in an underlying genetic condition.
Vanessa Clark, Sorrell's sister, remembered him as "brilliant, sweet, smart, kind," adding "his favorite thing was his coaches and his teammates, that was his second family."
Northwest Guilford Vikings teammates held a moment of silence Saturday, taking a knee at the 42-yard-line to honor Sorrell during their game.
As of Tuesday, September 1, the GoFundMe has raised more than $32,000 toward a $50,000 goal, with a vigil scheduled for Wednesday night at Northwest Guilford High School's football stadium.
