Microsoft: Russia, China increasingly using AI to escalate cyberattacks on the US

Microsoft reports over 200 AI-driven cyberattacks by Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea in July alone targeting U.S. systems for espionage, disinformation, and disruption.

  • On Thursday Microsoft published its annual digital threats report saying Russia, China, Iran and North Korea sharply increased AI-driven cyberattacks against the United States.
  • Adversaries are exploiting AI to automate cyberattacks, spread disinformation and penetrate systems, while government cyber operations seek classified data, disrupt supply chains and critical public services.
  • This July Microsoft found more than 200 instances of AI-generated fake content, including phishing emails translated into fluent English and North Korea using AI personas for remote tech job applications.
  • The report finds the United States is the top target as many U.S. companies and organizations operate with outdated defenses, leaving critical systems vulnerable to attackers.
  • Experts warn this is a pivotal moment as rapid AI innovation eases deception and aids defense, while attribution challenges grow due to denials from Russia, China and Iran.
