Woman’s Mid-Interview Arrest at Grand Rapids Protest Sparks National Attention
Jessica Plichta, the only one arrested among about 200 protesters, was charged with obstructing a roadway and failing to obey police orders during a Venezuela protest.
- On Jan. 3, Jessica Plichta, 22-year-old protest organizer and preschool teacher, was arrested on camera by two officers during a live WZZM interview in downtown Grand Rapids.
- A downtown Grand Rapids march on Saturday condemned the U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro, with Jessica Plichta helping Grand Rapids Opponents of War organize after attending the People's Assembly for Peace and Sovereignty of Our America summit.
- The Grand Rapids Police Department said officers made over 25 PA announcements from a marked police cruiser ordering protesters to move to the sidewalk, but they refused and Plichta was arrested for obstructing a roadway and failure to obey a lawful command, reports said.
- After her detention, Plichta was held at the Kent County Correctional Facility for about three hours before release, and video of her on-air arrest circulated nationally after Brandon Friedman posted it.
- Amid the U.S. operation in Venezuela, supporters and critics of the arrest raised First Amendment concerns, while Thomas Walker warned it risks creating a destabilizing precedent.
