Michael Bay Is in Negotiations to Helm Next Transformers Film With Steven Spielberg Producing
Spielberg will lead creative oversight as Paramount develops the eighth live-action film, with the franchise topping $5.4 billion worldwide and Bay in early talks to direct.
- On Tuesday, Paramount Pictures appointed Steven Spielberg to oversee creative direction for the next live-action Transformers film alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, while sources indicate Michael Bay is in early talks to return as director.
- The franchise has generated more than $5.4 billion in global box office revenue, with Spielberg and Bay previously collaborating on the first two films that launched the series into a worldwide phenomenon.
- Screenwriter Jason Fuchs penned the modern-day script, which Bay reportedly read after meeting with Spielberg earlier this week, hoping to revitalize the brand after tepid box office responses to recent entries like Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
- Paramount confirmed the previously teased Transformers-G.I. Joe crossover will not move forward. Instead, the studio is developing a separate G.I. Joe film with director Danny McBride and actor Bradley Cooper leading the team.
- Producers Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Hasbro will also join the project, marking one of the first major initiatives under the newly formed Skydance following the Paramount-WB acquisition closure.
