Mexico City Tightens Security, Caps Crowds for Mexico-England Match After 4 Deaths
Authorities will allow only 25,000 people at the Angel of Independence and reinforce patrols with 6,000 officers after four fans died in celebrations.
On Friday, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced doubled security and capacity limits at the Angel of Independence monument for Sunday's Mexico-England World Cup match following four fan deaths earlier this week.
The deaths occurred on June 30 when two women, ages 19 and 44, and a 48-year-old man died from asphyxiation during street celebrations after Mexico's victory over Ecuador; a 25-year-old man died later from cardiorespiratory arrest.
Security will be reinforced along Paseo de la Reforma with 6,000 officers, double the number deployed on June 30, while 7,500 police officers secure Azteca Stadium and 3,300 patrol the main square.
Mexico City Secretary of Public Security Pablo announced that only 25,000 people will be allowed access to the Angel monument, with visitors directed to more than 50 designated viewing areas throughout the city once capacity is reached.
