Chicharito Signed by Expansion Atlético Dallas in the USL Championship
The 38-year-old striker is expected to help build the expansion club’s profile and contribute immediately, reporters said.
On Monday, USL Championship expansion team Atletico Dallas announced the signing of Mexican soccer star Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez as the club's first-ever player.
Former LaLiga and Ligue 1 player Peter Luccin serves as the team's inaugural manager, announced in February. "Players earn respect through the standards they set every day," Luccin said of the signing.
Hernandez, Mexico's all-time leading scorer with 52 goals, previously played for Manchester United and Real Madrid. "I came here to help build the future of football in Dallas," Hernandez said.
Soccer insider Fabrizio Romano reported the signing, noting Hernandez is expected to contribute immediately. The team will call the Cotton Bowl home, sharing the venue with Trinity FC.
While Hernandez will join the roster in 2027, the expansion franchise debuts in spring 2027. "Atlético Dallas isn't asking me to continue someone else's story," Hernandez said, signaling his foundational role.
Mexican Chicharito Hernández signed for two seasons with the option of one more with Atlético Dallas, a club that seeks to boost the growth of the USL and compete with MLS.
