Journalist Shot Dead in Mexico After Blaming State Government for Death Threats
Authorities opened a probe after Leyva’s death, as at least five journalists have been killed in Mexico this year, press freedom groups said.

- Mexico remains one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists outside active war zones. Press freedom groups report that the vast majority of crimes against journalists go unpunished, creating systemic impunity.
- Leyva's death marks at least the fourth killing of a journalist in the country since June. Other victims include Luis Angel Lopez and Manuel Moreno, both killed in June, plus Roxana Guzmán, whose remains were found in Veracruz in early July.
- The Attorney General's Office has initiated investigations into Leyva's killing. Authorities requested assistance from the Special Prosecutor's Office for Crimes Against Freedom of Expression to support the inquiry.
- Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara wrote that Leyva "was a journalist critical of our government, like many other journalists who exercise their right every day to question, point out issues, and freely express their opinions." At least five journalists have been killed in Mexico so far in 2026.
