Microsoft Likely to Sign EU AI Code of Practice, Meta Rebuffs Guidelines
EUROPEAN UNION, JUL 18 – Meta joins other tech firms in opposing the EU AI Code of Practice, citing legal uncertainties and potential harm to AI innovation, as rules take effect next month.
- Meta Platforms reviewed the European Commission’s Code of Practice for general-purpose AI models and refused to sign it, weeks before the AI Act rules take effect, and despite its voluntary nature.
- Last week, the EU’s voluntary Code of Practice aims to help companies comply with the AI Act, which requires system registration and quality controls, with a deadline of Aug. 2 next year.
- Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, warned in a LinkedIn post that `Europe is heading down the wrong path on AI,` and industry peers such as Alphabet, Microsoft, and Mistral AI urged the delay.
- Despite calls for delay, the European Commission held firm on its timeline, and OpenAI committed to signing the code of practice.
- Next month, the rules take effect under the AI Act passed last year, which bans unacceptable risk uses such as cognitive behavioral manipulation and social scoring.
