Meta releases a new tool to protect reels creators from having their work stolen
Meta's new tool helps Facebook creators control unauthorized use of reels by blocking visibility, tracking performance, and adding attribution, aiming to curb impersonation and spam.
- On Monday, Meta introduced a Facebook content protection mobile tool that can automatically detect when a creator's original reel is reposted on Facebook or Instagram.
- Responding to prior enforcement, Meta said the tool helps creators protect original work after removing around 10 million impersonating profiles and acting against 500,000 spammy accounts.
- Creators can block reels on Facebook and Instagram, track performance, add attribution links with an `original` label, add accounts to an allow list, release claims, or dispute via the IP reporting channel.
- Blocking a reel reduces its distribution but doesn’t punish the reposting account, and Meta says creator controls may encourage more sharing on Facebook despite risks of restrictions or loss of tool access for abuse.
- Rolling out to eligible creators, the feature requires reels be posted to Facebook to be tracked; Meta says it now reaches Facebook Content Monetization program creators and Rights Manager users.
