Meta launches new AI model as Zuckerberg champions open-weight push

Meta is opening more models and adding a $1 billion community fund as Zuckerberg argues broad access will keep AI power from concentrating in a few hands.

  • On Monday, August 10, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model designed for agentic tasks, while calling for reduced U.S. regulatory barriers to compete with Chinese rivals.
  • Chinese startups including Alibaba, DeepSeek, and Moonshot currently lead in open-weight model performance, prompting Zuckerberg to argue U.S. policy must enable domestic firms to compete internationally in this domain.
  • Meta also previewed a $1 billion 'Future is for Everyone Fund' to invest in communities hosting data centers, citing Richland Parish, Louisiana, where tax revenue funded $50,000 teacher bonuses.
  • Advocating for a philosophy of individual empowerment, Zuckerberg wrote that broadly distributing AI safeguards against power concentration in governments and businesses rather than centralizing it.
  • The company will implement governance structures giving independent directors approval authority over safety criteria, as Meta plans to release Muse Spark 1.2 in the coming weeks.
