UK weather: Yellow warning for thunderstorms as heatwave intensifies
UNITED KINGDOM, JUN 20 – The 13-hour yellow warning covers northern England, Wales, and the Midlands with risks including flooding, power cuts, and hail as the heatwave ends, Met Office says.
The Met Office has put northern England and areas of North Wales under a yellow thunderstorm warning starting mid-afternoon on Saturday, June 21, which will remain in effect until early Sunday morning, June 22.
This warning follows a heatwave with temperatures reaching 32.2C in Kew, west London on Thursday and forecasts of up to 33C in some areas, including 30C in the North East this weekend.
The thunderstorms may bring intense electrical activity, sizable hailstones, strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and surface water flooding that could disrupt travel in cities such as Leeds, York, Nottingham, Manchester, and Sheffield.
The UK Health Security Agency has activated an amber warning for heat-related health risks across all regions of England, highlighting serious potential effects on health and social care, including a rise in mortality rates among people aged 65 and older or those with existing health conditions.
The Met Office advised people to stay updated with forecasts, prepare flood plans and secure loose objects before storms while noting the risk of flash flooding and difficult driving conditions.
