Forecasters Warn of More Heavy Snow Across Swathes of Northern Scotland
The Met Office warns of 5-10cm snow and icy conditions causing travel disruption, school closures, and ongoing recovery efforts across Scotland.
Met Office extended the yellow warning for snow and ice until Tuesday, 6 January, covering Scotland including Perth, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland, Angus and Perth and Kinross.
Forecasters warn of further snow and ice, with deep snowdrifts up to 1.2 metres blocking lines while Grampian, north‑west Highlands, and Aberdeenshire expect 5-10cm widely and some 20-30cm on Monday.
Rail operators shut the Inverness–Wick/Thurso, Inverness–Kyle, Inverness–Aberdeen and Aberdeen–Dundee lines after heavy snow; Network Rail teams logged more than 4,000 hours clearing tracks and Loganair cancelled flights from Aberdeen and Inverness airports, plus some at Sumburgh and Kirkwall airports.
First Minister John Swinney said ministers met police, local authorities and utilities on Monday to coordinate recovery after snow caused significant impact.
Further amber warnings state the Met Office expects more heavy snow to move east across central and northern Scotland on Tuesday, with 2-5cm widely and 10-15cm in some areas.
