Seattle-Area Teenager Dies in Lacrosse Accident
Paramedics kept Eliot Abramson alive before surgery, but the Mercer Island High School sophomore died from injuries suffered at a recruiting showcase.
Mercer Island High School sophomore Eliot Abramson died Sunday from injuries sustained after being struck in the back of the neck by a lacrosse ball during a June 1 showcase event at Islander Stadium.
Emergency responders were called after Abramson lost consciousness, and a firefighter "kept Eliot's heart beating" before he was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for surgery.
A 6-foot-2 midfielder on the MIHS 2026 roster, Eliot had recently obtained his driver's license and made the courageous decision to be an organ donor, a choice his family now honors.
This tragedy marks the second high school lacrosse fatality in the past year; on May 6, 2025, 16-year-old Dylan Veselic suffered a similar craniocervical injury during an Ohio game and died days later.
The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association governs boys' lacrosse in the state, as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association does not oversee the sport.
