Two men found guilty of second-degree murder in random roadside shooting near Calgary
The jury also found both men guilty of two armed robbery counts tied to Hough’s work truck and an attempted theft from a FortisAlberta worker.
A Court of King's Bench jury convicted Elijah Blake Strawberry and Arthur Wayne Penner of second-degree murder on Saturday for fatally shooting Colin Hough, a Rocky View County employee, near Conrich on Aug. 6, 2024.
Hough stopped to investigate a burning truck on a rural road when two masked men emerged and opened fire, striking him three times as he attempted to assist them with their disabled vehicle.
Jurors deliberated for 14 hours before convicting both men of armed robbery for stealing Hough's truck and attempting to take a vehicle from FortisAlberta worker Matthew Andres, who was shot in the arm at the same location.
Strawberry and Penner face mandatory life sentences for second-degree murder, with the jury recommending parole ineligibility periods ranging from 10 to 25 years based on their recommendations.
Justice Shane Parker will determine final parole ineligibility later this year, while defense counsel requested forensic mental assessments and Gladue reports for both men during sentencing proceedings.
