Stolen Cambridge Uni plate returned after 115 years
The plate, taken as a souvenir by student Gordon Stewart Wimbush around 1908, was kept by his family in Coventry before its recent return to the college archivist.
- More than 100 years after it was taken, Gonville & Caius College received the decorative plate now held by the college archivist.
- After joining Caius in 1908, Gordon Stewart Wimbush is believed to have pilfered the plate, while the college said students historically took crockery and cutlery as souvenirs.
- While living in Coventry, Yvonne Browne later returned the plate, saying `I gladly return the plate to its proper home in their memory,` added Ms Browne.
- Its decoration and imprint indicate the plate is decorated with a view of Caius Court and marked 'CAIUS COLL.', while Gordon Stewart Wimbush's later World War One service adds provenance context.
- Caius College places the plate in the context of student souvenir-taking, noting its link to Edwardian-era alumni and dining traditions preserved by the Wimbush family.
