Moment Hero Tradies Pin Masked Axeman
Tradies restrained the suspect after police say he attempted to carjack another driver during an eight-vehicle crash, and no one else was injured.
On Thursday at 7am, a 29-year-old man from Altona North allegedly caused an eight-vehicle collision at the intersection of Sydney Road and Bolinda Road in Campbellfield, Melbourne, before attempting an axe-wielding carjacking.
The Toyota involved in the pile-up was stolen from Reservoir three days earlier; witnesses described the man wielding an axe before being struck by a ute during the attempted carjacking.
Nearby tradies intervened after the man staggered down a street, tackling him to the ground and restraining him with cable ties. "It was surprising how quick they grabbed him," witness Nicholas said.
The suspect was transported to hospital under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed no-one else was injured and are seeking the carjacking victim to come forward.
Witness Jaimie expressed no sympathy for the offender, stating, "He deserved it, 100 per cent deserved it, no remorse." Police urge witnesses with footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
