'I Was Fined for Spending Six Hours in a Car Park - I Was only There 20 Minutes!'
MERRI-BEK CITY COUNCIL AREA, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, JUN 17 – Merri-Bek City Council will refund up to $12 million after overcharging about 250,000 parking fines due to a legislative misinterpretation spanning 12 years.
The City of Merri-Bek council announced a Parking Fines Refund Scheme starting July to address overcharging errors dating back to 2013.
The scheme followed discovery last year that the council misinterpreted legislation and lacked a required resolution for fine penalties applied since 2013.
Approximately 248,000 parking fines were impacted, with drivers being overbilled by amounts ranging from $43 to $59, resulting in an estimated total overcharge of $12 million.
Council chief executive Cathy Henderson acknowledged the error and assured that it is being addressed, confirming there will be no further effects on enforcement or council services.
Affected motorists must apply online for refunds, which will be available for 12 months, while a clear appeals process remains in place for disputes.
