Caleb Williams Elected as One of Bears Captains for the 3rd Straight Season
A player vote returned four captains from last season, and coach Ben Johnson said the leaders will represent the locker room and fans.
- Bears coach Ben Johnson named five permanent captains for the 2026 season Tuesday at Halas Hall: quarterback Caleb Williams, guard Joe Thuney, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, linebacker Edwards, and kicker Cairo Santos.
- Four of the five captains are returning from last year's leadership group, with former safety Kevin Byard the only absence after joining the Patriots in March.
- Williams enters the season with high expectations following his franchise-record 3,942 yards and 27 touchdown passes that led Chicago to the NFC North title in Johnson's first year.
- As the team prepares for Sunday's season opener at the Panthers' Bank of America Stadium, Johnson remains hopeful wide receiver Rome Odunze will be ready despite leaving Thursday's practice injured.
- Williams emphasized personal growth and confidence, stating, "I would say that's the biggest thing, the confidence in myself," regarding his ability to recognize defenses and execute the playbook.
