B.C. Turns Blue: Conservatives Win Majority, with Cariboo MLA Lorne Doerkson to Be Premier
Doerkson unified a fractured opposition and rode criticism of David Eby’s early election call to a sweeping majority, pollsters said.
On Saturday, Lorne Doerkson led the Conservative party to a majority victory in a snap provincial election called by Premier David Eby, the self-described "guy from Williams Lake" securing a sweeping win.
Doerkson emerged from obscurity six weeks ago to unify a fractured Opposition, halting waves of defections under former leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay and bringing seven defectors back from the CentreBC party.
Financial agent Scott Tucker, who has known Doerkson for about 15 years, described him as "not one to go it alone," noting his work representing Cariboo-Chilcotin since 2020.
During his victory speech, Doerkson thanked Premier Eby for his service, saying "it asks a lot of a person and a lot of their family," and also thanked Green Leader Emily Lowan for inspiring thousands of British Columbians.
Doerkson admitted he did not plan two years ago to seek this role, stating "I didn't expect this," as the incoming premier transitions from focusing his legislative career on regional issues to governing the province.
