Bodies of ambushed Salvadoran soldiers found in Haiti, New York Times reports
Bukele said the recovered bodies were not the missing aviation technicians as El Salvador sent more than 100 special forces troops to aid the search.
- On Saturday, search teams recovered four bodies outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti, believed to be Salvadoran soldiers missing since an ambush. The New York Times reported the remains were badly burned, requiring autopsies to confirm identities.
- The four Salvadoran soldiers went missing on Sunday after their armored vehicle was attacked on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince while returning from a market. This marked the first major attack on the United Nations-authorized Gang Suppression Force since operations began this year.
- Local media linked the ambush to powerful gangs Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo. The Gang Suppression Force operates with about 2,000 troops, significantly below its 5,500 authorized ceiling, following an earlier Kenyan-led effort that faced chronic resource shortages.
- President Nayib Bukele announced on Wednesday that El Salvador had launched a military operation to rescue the missing men. Following recovery, authorities handed the remains to a Salvadoran military team at the international airport.
- Haiti's gangs have expanded sharply since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, seizing control of large areas of Port-au-Prince. This surge has displaced 1.4 million to 1.5 million people, creating the volatile environment challenging the international mission.
