Irene Jones was born Irene Bromilow the youngest of six on March 1 1924. She narrowly missed becoming a leap year baby by just a few hours. The family grew up in Friars Cottage on Washway Lane - often referred to as the white cottage - which was a small holding selling eggs, flowers and bedding plants. Aged 17, the former Moss Bank infant school and Windlehurst Junior School pupil met the love of her life Bert Jones.
