Large Biodigester Project Planned in Central Minnesota
The biodigester will process up to 115,000 tons of manure and food waste annually to produce renewable natural gas for 1,600 homes, reducing waste and supporting clean energy.
- On August 19, 2025, Vanguard Renewables LLC received full approval for two permits needed to develop a sizable anaerobic digestion facility near Litchfield, Minnesota, from the governing authorities of Meeker County.
- These permits included a conditional use permit for the digester and a manure handling permit change for Wagner Family Dairy, which supplies manure and leases the 22-acre site.
- The facility is designed to handle as much as 115,000 tons of feedstock annually, composed of 60 to 70 percent food waste from metropolitan processors and 30 to 40 percent dairy manure, to generate renewable natural gas.
- Commissioner Cheryl Van Ort, whose district includes the site, said she received many calls before a well-attended public hearing that addressed odor, manure handling, and traffic concerns involving up to 30 daily trucks; 288th Street will be upgraded to 10-ton standards as part of the permit.
- After reviewing the environmental assessment worksheet, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency determined that the project would not cause notable environmental harm; however, the company must still secure building permits from Meeker County and possibly a state permit for pipeline development before starting construction.
