In the second half of the tenth century, Prague was probably the most important slave market in Alpine Europe. In modern history, Czechs were not slaves or slaveholders. This was said by historians Jan Zelenka and Jan Slavíček from the Historical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Slave Trade, which was declared by UNESCO in 1998.
