McGuinty delivers pro-Canada message in Alberta, highlights $8B in funding
McGuinty said the funding includes $550 million for a western operating base for the Air Force’s CC-33 Husky fleet.
Standing alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton, Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty announced $8 billion in ongoing military spending for Alberta, including $550 million for the Air Force's CC-33-Husky fleet western operating base.
With Albertans preparing to vote on Confederation on Oct. 19, the referendum ballot contains 10 questions, including whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving.
Positioning Alberta at the forefront of air defence, McGuinty stated that a strong Canada requires a strong Alberta, bolstered by the $550 million Air Force investment in the CC-33-Husky fleet.
Smith emphasized the announcement showcases federal-provincial cooperation, stating that Canada and Ottawa can work together with the province, with her appearance at the base underscoring the collaborative message.
Days before the Oct. 19 vote, McGuinty framed the military spending as an example of how Confederation functions through mutual support in shared endeavors, particularly defence and wartime cooperation.
