As the flood waters receded across the southern West Virginia coalfields following torrential rain and flooding on Feb. 15-16, 2025, Gov. Patrick Morrisey asked for both public and individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. By early March 2025, the request included 14 counties. On April 23, 2025, that aid was denied for seven of those counties including Kanawha, Cabell, Boone and Lincoln counties.
