Motor Racing-Verstappen Says Austin Circuit’s Bumpy Ride Gets His Back Up
The four-time world champion said repeated bumps are worsening spine checks and could force costly track repairs, while other drivers also reported discomfort.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen criticized the bumpy track surface at COTA in Austin, claiming it causes spinal damage and warning the situation is becoming "out of control."
The four-time world champion previously joked he would "probably need to order a new spine" and "become like Robocop" after enduring vertical loads of more than 9G in past races.
Mercedes driver George Russell noted that rule changes, including 18-inch tires and 10 mil ride heights, have reduced effective suspension. McLaren's Lando Norris added he requires headache tablets because of the bumps.
Verstappen labeled the bumps "unacceptable," stating that repairing the surface would require costly excavating works to eliminate the unnatural bumps threatening driver health.
Drivers like McLaren's Lando Norris highlighted the physical demands of modern Formula One racing, noting the impressive longevity of veterans Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso despite the sport's significant bodily impact.
