Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor Killed Trying to Stop Wrong-Way Driver in Crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield
Early Wednesday, a Massachusetts State Police Trooper and a wrong-way driver were killed in a head-on collision on Route 1 in Lynnfield around 2 a.m.
The Trooper was among several officers responding to 911 calls from drivers who spotted a gray Jeep heading south in the northbound lanes near the Lynnfield tunnel.
Although emergency responders transported the Trooper to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, he succumbed to his injuries. Massachusetts State Police confirmed the fatality at 9:15 a.m., while the wrong-way driver died at the scene.
Governor Maura Healey stated she was "heartbroken," noting the Trooper "put himself in harm's way to protect others." The crash forced Route 1 northbound closure at Walnut Street in Saugus.
