Mass. basketball coach accused of raping student faces charges
Scott Marino, 54, faces multiple charges for allegedly assaulting an 18-year-old student known to him and providing alcohol; he was placed on leave by Malden Public Schools.
- On Wednesday, February 25, Scott Marino, a Malden teacher and coach, was arrested and charged with multiple counts including rape and furnishing alcohol to a person under 21.
- On Feb. 18, prosecutors say the alleged assault occurred at Marino's Stoneham home involving the 18-year-old female student who lived with Marino and his wife as a foster placement and played on the Malden High School girls' basketball team.
- Prosecutor Jacob McCrindle said Marino took the student into Boston for takeout, stopped at a liquor store to buy Patron tequila and strawberry margarita mix, then allegedly assaulted her after she became ill.
- Following the hearing, Malden Superintendent of Schools Timothy Sippel said the district placed Marino on leave and will cooperate with law enforcement while a judge ordered GPS monitoring and restrictions in Woburn District Court.
- Amid community concern, Marino's lawyer says he has support while the victim received care at Winchester Hospital; the allegations shocked former players.
