Maruti Suzuki leads, Tata extends gap over Mahindra in August sales
August brought strong growth across India’s passenger vehicle market, with Maruti Suzuki retaining its lead, Tata Motors widening its advantage over Mahindra, and Kia overtaking Toyota for fifth place.
August 2026 was a good sales month for Tata Motors. The company's passenger vehicle sales grew by 56% year-on-year. Especially, there was a huge increase of 94% in sales of electric vehicles. At the same time, the prices of Tata cars and SUVs have been increased by up to ₹25,000 from September 1.

India's passenger vehicle registrations rose 16% YoY to 3,96,269 units in August 2026, according to Vahan data. Maruti Suzuki remained the market leader with a 41.8% share, while Tata Motors recorded 40.6% YoY growth and strengthened its No. 2 position.
