Martin Short: Facing Tragedy with Joy
On Tuesday, Netflix released 'Marty, Life Is Short,' a documentary directed by filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan that explores comedy legend Martin Short's life and career spanning more than 50 years.
Throughout his life, Short has navigated profound tragedies: his parents and brother died during his youth, his wife Nancy Dolman succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2010, and his daughter Katherine died by suicide in February.
Despite these hardships, Short told CBS Morning that grief developed in him a 'muscle of survival.' Tom Hanks, a longtime friend, described Short as someone who 'operates at the speed of joy,' a perspective Short credits with helping him persevere.
Continuing his five-decade career, Short is preparing for another season of 'Only Murders in the Building' while discussing a potential Broadway collaboration with Meryl Streep. 'We're just not sure if the box office would be there,' he joked.
Kasdan described the project as a 'love letter' to Nancy Dolman. Short emphasized the documentary's broader message: 'We must figure a way to survive through grief without denying it or without in any way undermining its importance.
