Private University Terminates All Its Staff, Says It Can't Pay Them
Martin University, Indiana's only Predominantly Black Institution, faces suspension due to long-term financial issues and a drop to 223 students, officials said.
- Martin University's Board of Trustees said Wednesday it will suspend operations at the end of the current semester, citing significant financial difficulties and falling enrollment.
- Earlier this year, Martin University's long-term financial condition worsened after Gov. Mike Braun did not renew a $5 million boost; audits in June 2023 raised viability doubts, and interim leaders cited ongoing fiscal strain.
- Interim President Felicia Brokaw told employees the terminations were due to unpaid payroll, with staff terminated effective Dec. 15, 2025, and trustees contributing personally while payment timing remained unknown.
- In an email sent Tuesday, Martin told students to reach out to other colleges and provided a transition list including Marian University, UIndy, and Indiana Wesleyan University, while free child care for student-parents will end.
- If Martin ever reopens it would need to seek accreditation again since the Higher Learning Commission does not allow temporary pauses, and Rep. Greg Porter, D-Indianapolis, vowed to fight for state support at the state budget committee.
