Mark Bennett: No lives lost, but train mishap took toll on tiny Lewis in '53
Lewis, Indiana, was devastated by a freight train derailment in March 1953. The train was carrying thousands of pounds of Korean War-era ammunition. Nine homes and six commercial buildings were leveled. Only three people required hospitalization, according to a 2003 account of the derailment.
