Many new UK drone users must take theory test before flying outside
From January 1, over 500,000 UK drone users must pass a Civil Aviation Authority online theory test to obtain a five-year Flyer ID for drones weighing 100g or more.
- From January 1, 2026, the UK Civil Aviation Authority requires anyone flying drones or model aircraft 100g or more outdoors to pass an online theory test to obtain a Flyer ID.
- The Civil Aviation Authority said the weight or class system reshapes operator classification to enable `safe expansion`, with Jonathan Nicholson urging users to know the new rules before flying.
- More than 500,000 drone users face taking a free online test on the Civil Aviation Authority website to obtain a Flyer ID with five-year validity.
- Noncompliance carries legal penalties including fines or prison, but with limited enforcement resources, some may try to `fly under the radar`, Dr Alan McKenna said.
- Children under 13 must obtain a Flyer ID with a parent or guardian present for the test, and owners of camera-equipped drones must register for an Operator ID, the CAA advises.
