Hostage Crisis Averted: Release of Kuki and Naga Members in Manipur
Police said 28 of 38 Kuki and Naga hostages were freed after appeals from civil society and church groups.
On Friday, The Manipur Police confirmed the release of 28 Kuki and Naga hostages held in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts, following appeals from political leaders and community organizations to ease tribal tensions.
The abductions followed Wednesday's violent attacks in Kangpokpi, where gunmen killed three church leaders, including Thadou Baptist Association president Vumthang Sitlhou, and injured four others.
Fourteen of those released were Kukis and 14 were Nagas, though State government figures suggest 31 were initially involved, while at least 10 hostages remain in captivity.
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said the administration was "actively holding discussions with civil society groups and political leaders to secure the release" of remaining captives.
These clashes occur against the backdrop of ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities that broke out in May 2023, leaving at least 260 dead and more than 59,000 displaced.
