Mandatory neck protection comes to PWHL as league tweaks rules before upcoming season
The league is reducing its officiating roster to 42 and testing a new preseason overtime option to improve consistency and safety.
On Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, The PWHL mandated cut-resistant neck protection for all players during games and pre-game warm-ups for the 2026-27 season.
New rulebook updates allow players to bat the puck above shoulder height without whistles and include clearer definitions regarding permissible and illegal body checks.
During 12 pre-season scrimmages, The PWHL will test a new overtime rule allowing the non-offending team to choose a penalty shot instead of a power play.
The PWHL reduced its officiating team to 42 members for the new season, down from 59 officials in 2025-26, to promote greater consistency.
Training camps open Nov. 18, followed by the regular season beginning Dec. 5, preparing the league for the 2026-27 campaign.
