Canada must wear IIHF-approved jerseys at world women's hockey championship
The team must wear IIHF and True Hockey uniforms after a court fight over commercial rights and jersey control.
On Friday, Canada begins the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship in Herning, Denmark, with players required to wear International Ice Hockey Federation-mandated jerseys instead of Bauer uniforms.
The International Ice Hockey Federation mandated all member nations wear official True Hockey uniforms beginning in 2026-27, overriding Hockey Canada's long-term Bauer contract and USA Hockey's CCM deal; legal challenges by both nations were ultimately unsuccessful.
General manager Daniele Sauvageau and head coach Kori Cheverie lead a youth-focused roster with only 13 of 25 players from the Olympic squad; Canada enters without injured stars Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse, while forward Sarah Fillier remains "day by day" with her recovery.
The Canadians headline Group B, opening against Sweden on Friday before facing Japan, Denmark, and Finland; for the first time since 2011, Canada will not meet the United States in the preliminary round.
Aiming for a record 14th gold medal, Canada seeks to regain dominance over the US after losing last year's Olympic final; the two nations have met in 23 of 24 previous world championship finals, maintaining an exceptionally close rivalry.
