Officials said a tilted fireworks canister struck Rhett Luttrell in the torso, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
On Saturday night, 4-year-old Rhett Luttrell died in Ferguson, Kentucky, after a tilted fireworks canister struck him in the torso, the Pulaski County Coroner's Office confirmed.
The accident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. during Fourth of July celebrations while Luttrell's family was shooting off fireworks at a home on Jacksboro Road.
Luttrell was pronounced dead at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, the deputy coroner told WKYT.
Somerset police have opened a pending investigation into the incident, though no further information regarding the cause was available as of Monday.
The holiday weekend in Kentucky ended in tragedy, marking a rare fatal fireworks accident for the deputy coroner who had never before worked a child-related injury.
