Manatee County Selects Nopetro and Johnson Controls to Deliver Innovative Renewable Natural Gas Project
The $50 million project will reduce emissions equal to 5.3 million gallons of gasoline annually and create about 55 jobs, boosting Manatee County's economy.
- Nopetro Energy and Johnson Controls announced a $50 million investment to design, finance, build and operate a renewable natural gas facility in Manatee County capturing methane from Lena Road Landfill.
- By capturing landfill biogas, the project plans to stop flaring and cut emissions equivalent to CO₂ from 5.3 million gallons of gasoline, comparable to carbon captured by about 22,000 acres of forest.
- When operational, the facility will produce enough renewable energy to power more than 4,500 Florida homes and support approximately 50 construction jobs.
- Manatee County officials say converting landfill gas into renewable natural gas will generate new revenue and help reduce taxpayer costs, as this is seen as a free revenue source on waste currently burned off.
- The first facility of its kind on Florida’s west coast, with construction expected in 2026 and operations expected in 2027, will position the region in a new RNG market.
